Chair [realia]. 1921

Large, high-backed chair was hand carved from wood of an old American frigate. The chair has wooden arms with a scroll at each hand. There is an eagle carved along the crest rail and a bronze shield-shaped presentation plaque at the top beneath the eagle. The plaque is engraved "PRESENTED TO / WARREN GAMALIEL HARDING / BY FELLOW MEMBERS OF / THE FOURTH ESTATE / TO COMMEMORATE HIS / ELEVATION TO THE / PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES / MARCH FIFTH 1921." A fist holding a bundle of lightning bolts and a woman playing a trumpet are carved into the crest rail on either side of the engraved plaque. The chair seat and back are upholstered in red leather.
